Job Summary

The Detention Officer is responsible to ensure the safety and security of detainees in custody, acting in accordance with the highest ethical standards at all times, and ensuring a spirit of fairness and integrity in the on-going execution of their duties.

Job Responsibilities

Performs duties related to the detention, processing, safeguarding, security, and escort of detainees as required by the contractSupervises and controls detainee behavior during the operation of the detention facility; or restrain by force if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraintsExercises appropriate judgment in handling of special needs situations or detaineesCommunicates effectively and coherently with other staff or detainee with approved facility communication devices including the telephone system, intercom system, and portable radios; demonstrate effective communicative skills with detainee, public and staffPerforms searches of detainees, vehicles, mail items, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings, indoor and outdoor areas which may involve feeling or detecting objects, walking, kneeling, bending or stooping for long periods of timeEscorts detainees (hostile, aggressive, passive, etc.) using handcuffs and other approved restraints in accordance to policy and procedureMaintains company equipment and uniforms in functional condition as prescribed for by company policyTransports detainees securely using ICE approved restraints and vehicles to off-site locationEnsures that your communication radio is in good working order with a fully charged batteryInspects, maintains, and cares for authorized post related equipmentAttends to housing, feeding, and the physical well-being of detainees, on a variety of shifts 24 hours a dayEnforces rules and regulations of the detention facilityProvides care, custody and control of detainees at all timesRemoves detainees from holding areas using proper restraints and security measuresGuards detainees at deportation or exclusion hearingsPerforms all work duties and activities in accordance with organization policies and proceduresFollows company-wide safety policies and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the Officer Handbook and other Company Safety PoliciesPerforms other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Speak, read, write, and understand EnglishMust maintain physical fitness standards and must be able to pass and maintain required physical testing requirements and standards which includes:Must be able to lift heavy object up to 50lbs frequently and up to 70lbs occasionallyMust be able to push a wheel chair bound individual weighing up to 300 lbs and helping individual in and out of chairMust be able to bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, twisting, reaching overhead and climb stairs, ladders and slopes periodicallyMust be able to pass a medical examination and meet health requirementsMust be able to stand and walk for long periods of time – minimum 4 hoursMust be at least 21 years of age and a US citizen or a person lawfully admitted into the United States for permanent residence and have resided in the U.S. for the last five yearsMust possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED)Must have the ability to pass a criminal background and consumer credit check (no criminal record) to obtain and maintain a DHS/ICE government clearanceMust be able to pass all pre-employment and random drug testsMust be able to pass a medical examination and meet health requirementsMust possess a valid state driver's licenseAbility to greet and deal tactfully and professionally with the general publicMust be willing to work shift hours to include, evening, nights, weekends and holidaysMust attend and pass defensive tactics trainingCapability of following and interpreting/understanding written and verbal orders, policies and regulations, printed rules and regulations, detailed written orders, training instructions and materials, and are able to compose written and oral reportsAbility to exercise good judgment: courage, alertness, an even temperament, and render satisfactory performance through his/her responsibilitiesAbility to maintain poise and self-control during potential emergencies and unexpected situations that may involve mental and physical stress such as disturbances, altercations, fires, and building evacuationsAbility to concisely and accurately prepare and write narratives of incidents and other written reportsMust be able to exercises judgment and use discretion in dealing with first response to any and all situationsMust have the ability to work with a diverse population of people, including people of different cultures, with different values and lifestyles; with a cross cultural perspectiveMust be able to demonstrate proficiency in methods and techniques of securing and controlling detainees by following required training, policy and procedureMust maintain proficiency with any special equipment used for your positionMust maintain a professional personal appearance, calm demeanor, and discretion with confidential informationMust possess a high degree of integrity, accountabilityMust adhere to the American Correctional Association and DHS ICE National Detention Standards at all times

BilingualAssociate or Bachelor level degree in Criminal Justice or related field
