Executive Director

Background: Founded in 1998, The American Foundation for Addiction Research (AFAR) is a non-profit organization committed to a mission of advancing the understanding and treatment of sex addiction. It accomplishes that mission through supporting research, education, and advocacy related to sex addiction and betrayal trauma. AFAR is officially located in Cave Creek, AZ but its board members and staff are located throughout the United States.

Position Available: AFAR seeks a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as Executive Director to advance the mission and agenda of the organization. Current position is part time with the potential to grow to a full-time position. Recognized as a leader in sex addiction and betrayal trauma, AFAR provides support and guidance to leaders in the recovery community, funding and partnership with sex addiction and betrayal trauma researchers, advocacy in professional and political spheres, and education to the clinical and general populations.

Responsibilities: The Executive Director serves as the chief operating officer of AFAR, working closely with and reporting to the President and Board of Directors. The Executive Director directs and administers all programs, operations, and policies.

Primary areas of responsibility include:Strategic Planning: develops and implements the organizations Strategic Plan and annual plans in conjunction with the Board.Program Development and Management: develops, implements, and supervises programs and services that are consistent with the organization's mission and Strategic Plan and that meet the needs of the sex addiction/betrayal trauma community (individuals affected, researchers, treatment providers, and other interested parties).Fund Development/Grant Oversight and Fiscal Management: together with the Board of Directors, develops and manages the fundraising and financial strategies of the organization; develops an annual budget for approval by the Board; oversees the management of all funds, consistent with the organization’s accounting system.Staff Leadership and Management: together with the Board of Directors, identifies staffing needs and implements a hiring process; supervises and evaluates staff; coordinates with the Board’s committees, volunteers, and partner organizations.Community Relations: together with the Board, develops effective working relationships with the sex addiction/betrayal trauma community (individuals affected, researchers, treatment providers, and other interested parties); develops and implements consistent organizational communication campaigns.Advocacy: along with members of the Board of Directors, serves as a spokesperson for AFAR in the sex addiction/betrayal trauma community (individuals affected, researchers, treatment providers, and other interested parties); articulates and communicates the value of research, education, and advocacy regarding sex addiction and betrayal trauma in improving the quality of life for those affected and the larger community; promotes community support of AFAR.Conducts all business at the highest standard of integrity ensuring that all activities are legal and ethical.

Experience/Qualifications:College graduate with at least 5 years management experience, preferably in non-profit organizations, with significant experience in sex addiction, betrayal trauma, or related areas; prior experience as an Executive Director is preferred.Master’s degree in a relevant field is a plus.Knowledge of AFAR and/or sex addiction/betrayal trauma communities is a plus.Proven record as a successful fundraiser.Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.Strong planning, organizational and analytical skills.Ability to positively motivate and develop (future) staff, board, volunteers, and build consensus.Visionary and innovative thinker.Ability to work collaboratively with the Board of Directors, (future) staff, researchers, and the sex addiction/betrayal trauma communities.

Compensation: Salary range $55,000 to $75,000, commensurate with experience.
