Transportation Manager

JOB SUMMARYThe Transportation Manager leads and manages the day-to-day activities of the transportation department in a safe and cost-effective manner.JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES1. Department LeadershipResponsible for overseeing the operation of a large transportation operation that meets the expectations and need of customers. This includes all day-to-day activities.Hires, leads, motivates, and evaluates the transportation team regarding the daily performance of their assigned duties in a manner consistent with company culture.Provides mentoring and guidance through performance management process, including the establishment of objectives, conducting performance reviews, pay recommendations, development planning, and succession planning.Ensures efficient and effective processes and communications are in place from order entry through manufacturing and shipping.Develops and manages short-term and long-term Logistics strategy to ensure readiness for growth, changes in the business and readiness for required capacity.Supports external and internal customers by addressing complaints and resolving issues. Responsible for promoting high quality customer service.Develops and implements KPI’s that help give meaningful measurement to department performance and help drive continuous improvement activities. KPI’s will be used for both internal fleet and external carriers and will be analyzed when working with Upper Management in shaping goals and strategies for the department. 2. Internal Fleet ManagementManages the movement of all products and goods in accordance with company policies and procedures.Responsible for ensuring that all drivers are scheduled and dispatched to pick up and deliver loads in a timely manner.Maintains a Continuous Improvement mindset while looking for new efficiencies within the internal fleet and increasing asset utilization.Develops, communicates, and implements transportation department policies and state and national regulations.3. Outside Carrier ManagementManages the daily/weekly/monthly schedule for outside carrier utilization. Ensure that outside carriers can supplement internal transportation operations. Book truck and potentially rail transportation of raw material.Continuously drives cost and service improvements across the carrier base with regular reviews, visible metrics, and clear accountability.Negotiates LTL and truck freight rates for shipping of finished goods, as well as monitor performance of selected carriers.Maintains existing relationships with outside carriers and continue to develop partnership and collaboration between all organizations.Defines requirements and processes for selecting modes and methods of transportation.4. OtherResearches and reports on the potential of utilizing Transportation Management System across logistics networkAll other duties as assigned
