Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
Master’s degree in philosophy or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Demonstrated proficiency and expertise in the discipline. 2+ years’ experience teaching, preferably at the college level. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Functional competency with the Canvas LMS , and other related educational technology tools. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team-oriented environment. Dedication to student-centered learning and academic excellence.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Philosophy or a closely related field. 5+ years of teaching experience at the college level, with a record of effective instruction and student engagement. Evidence of scholarly activity such as research publications, conference presentations, or secured grant funding. Demonstrated experience with innovative teaching methods, technology integration, and curriculum development.
Summary of Duties
The full-time philosophy faculty member at COTC will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in various philosophy courses, fostering student success, and contributing to the academic environment of the Division of Arts & Sciences. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in philosophy, effective teaching methodologies, and a track record of scholarly activity. Additionally, they will collaborate with colleagues, participate in departmental activities, and engage in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching and learning.
Summary Of Responsibilities
The full-time faculty member will
Serve as lead faculty for the philosophy program, providing innovative and effective instruction to enhance students’ communication skills and confidence. Provide oversight to ensure engaging curriculum, assignments, and assessments that align with course objectives and promote student success. Teach a variety of philosophy courses, including Intro to Philosophy, Ethics , and Critical Thinking, at the college and through College Credit Plus (dual enrollment) partnerships based on departmental needs. Provide academic advising and support services to students, including course selection, degree planning, and career guidance. Engage in scholarly activities, such as research, publication, and conference presentations, to contribute to the academic discipline and professional development. Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and other institutional initiatives to support the mission and goals of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department and the college. Maintain regular office hours and availability to students for academic assistance and consultation. Collaborate with colleagues to assess student learning, evaluate program effectiveness, and implement continuous improvement measures. Stay current with developments in the discipline, pedagogy, and educational technology through professional development activities and scholarly pursuits. Support the college’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by fostering a respectful and inclusive learning environment for all students. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department chair or academic administration.
