Special Education Teacher

Essential DutiesServes as the primary team leader in all aspects of educational programming through collaboration and consultation with other disciplinesOversees the provision of a therapeutic and educational environment through individual and small group instruction, designing individual modifications as needed and coordinating the learning needs of each studentAssists in direct student care as needed including lifting, feeding, toileting and busingProduces lesson plans, documents classroom activities and educational progress of students through data collection, recording daily activities, behavior, affect, and mood of students while in classDemonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, referral sources and the general publicParticipates in staff growth and professional development activitiesCompletes other related tasks as assigned

Job Specifications:Current NYS Special Education Teacher CertificationWork experience of at least 2 consecutive years of teaching children with disabilities preferredNecessary knowledge and skills to care for the physical and developmental needs of the studentsUnderstanding of child developmentCompassionate understanding of and genuine concern for children with multiple disabilities and their families Ability to communicate with students, staff members, and parents in a cordial and professional manner Ability to work in an educational setting in a confidential and professional mannerDaily lifting, movement and transferring of students is requiredTeam/mechanical lifting of students and or equipment and materialsMovement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices is requiredOther physical activities may be requiredOccasional travel with students on field trips may be necessaryPhysical contact with and/or possible exposure to bodily fluids may occurThis is a 12 month position.
