Software Engineer I

Our Opportunity

At Chewy we are building a team to launch a Sponsored Advertising business looking for a Software Engineer. Sponsored Ads creates a win-win ecosystem for shoppers, brand owners and Chewy! Shoppers are offered a range of alternate options to help them choose better and learn about new products, new brands, new promotions and different price points. Brand owners and advertisers get to showcase their product offerings in front row for their target audience (proud pet owners) and maximize their reach. Advertising is a critical component of the ecommerce ecosystem and provides a critical revenue stream to the company.

As an early member to the newly setup Sponsored Advertising team, you’ll be part of core technology team and will influence technical strategy across product search and discovery, relevance and ranking, prediction and auction of large selection of sponsored products in Chewy catalog. You’ll be at forefront of driving technology driven business impact.

What You’ll Do

Design and develop resilient system for a customer-facing web applicationsYou will have responsibility over components of Chewy’s systems – both development and operational needsDrive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative developmentBe involved design reviews and perform code reviews based on Chewy’s engineering rigor and standardsDebug production issues in Chewy services and tech stackMeasure and optimize the performance, effectiveness, and uptime of backend services

What You’ll Need

Bachelor’s Degree (MIS or CS preferred) or equivalent work experience2+ years of experience in an object-oriented language such as JavaMinimum 1 year of software development in Java/Spring Boot stackMinimum of 1 year of cloud architecture and service development experienceBe a hands-on Engineer spending significant percentage of their time writing code or debugging issuesKnowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operationsProficiency in Computer Science fundamentals – object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysisanalytical abilities & knowledge of design patternsExperience with building and deploying featuresAbility to learn domain knowledge in the area of e-commerce

Bonus

Experience in e-commerceExperience with agile methodologies a plusGood communication skills with technical audiencesExperience with cloud & orchestration technologies (AWS Services, Terraform, Ansible, etc.)Background with modern tools and environments (e.g., web services, version control systems, bug/issue tracking tools)Experience with configuration and deployment management via Terraform
