📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities
The City and County of Honolulu is seeking applicants to fill position of a Supervising Environmental Technician with the Department of Environmental Services, Environmental Quality Division, located in Kapolei.
This position plans, directs, coordinates and supervises a staff of lower level technicians engaged in the performance of complex inspectional, investigational and enforcement activities to ensure compliance with federal, state and local industrial wastewater pretreatment laws, rules and regulations; and performs other related duties as required.
Responsibilities include:Planning and supervising field inspections, investigations, and surveys concerning industrial pretreatment, Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) control program, hauled waste management program.Assisting in the research, investigation, and preparation of necessary enforcement actions for violations of the City's sewer use ordinance and industrial wastewater discharge permits.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.SUBSTITUTION TO EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: The following will substitute for up to two years of technical field experience which involved inspectional and/or investigational work relating to the enforcement of laws, ordinances, and/or rules and regulations:An associate's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university in Engineering Technology or Natural Sciences A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university in Engineering, or in a Biological or Physical Science There is NO substitution for the three years of technical field experience specific to the enforcement of water quality standards, or for one year of work experience at the next lower level.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:Six years of technical field experience which involved inspectional and/or investigational work relating to the enforcement of laws, ordinances, and/or rules and regulations, three years of which shall have been specific to the enforcement of water quality standards; OR one year of work experience at the next lower level (i.e., one year of work experience as an Environmental Technician IV); ANDIncluding or supplemented by work experience demonstrating aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader, or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license, as required. The current vacancy requires a valid automobile (Type 3) license, prior to appointment.
