SALARY $48,323.00 - $58,139.00 Annually

ELIGIBILITY: Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to this position identified as positions of trust will be required to authorize the release of and successfully complete a Fingerprint check.

PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months.

Class Description

A Fire Dispatcher receives emergency and non-emergency fire and medical call requests for service from the 911 call-center, 311, Mutual-Aid, and within the agency. A Fire Dispatcher dispatches calls for the Baltimore City municipality. Fire Dispatchers will assign emergency units in accordance with established emergency response protocols. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work rotating (12 hour) shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Work is performed in a radio communications center with dim overhead lights and light generated from computer screens. Work requires the ability to function in a highly stressful atmosphere, being able to multi-task, sitting for long periods, and the manipulation and operation of various equipment that involves hand-eye coordination, ability to listen to multiple on-going incidents, repeat verbatim and record case information.

SELECTION PROCESS

Minimum Qualifications

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have four years of experience in public contact work including two years of experience in operating two-way radio and related communications equipment.

OR

NOTES (EQUIVALENCIES): Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledges, Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of the geography, landmarks, hospitals, streets, and traffic patterns of Baltimore City.Ability to apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom and on the job to various emergency situations.Ability to learn Fire/EMS and Federal Communications rules and regulations, procedures, methods, terminology, and priorities.Ability to concentrate and react calmly, quickly, and decisively under continuous stressful conditions. Ability to type clean copy at a specified rate of speed.Ability to use radio communication equipment effectively.Ability to enter data accurately into computer terminals.Ability to communicate in a clear and distinct modulated voice while concurrently applying good listening skills in a multi-tasking environment.Ability to Use a Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD) as a daily function. Ability to work harmoniously with others in a team environment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – Candidates will be tested on their accuracy to listen and record the data on a computer terminal. The radio transmission will be given live verbally over a radio system, the candidate must then type the data received. Candidates will listen to pre-recorded radio transmissions and type the information as it is relayed. Testing is for accuracy of data input. This will be part of the interview process.
