By joining our Division of Highway Design, Developmental Branch as a TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER SPECIALIST in Franklin County, you’ll have the opportunity to review, analyze and perform intermediately complex engineering activities and work to obtain and develop professional engineering techniques; and perform other duties as assigned.

Holders of the Transportation Engineer Specialist position will complete tasks such as:

Develop survey training / workflows for construction personal. Work with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) team to develop best practices / requirements. Manage survey equipment for construction staff statewide. Support construction personal statewide.

Holders Of This Job Will Obtain The Following Skills

Assist Transportation Cabinet with technology advancements. Become an expert in multiple survey softwares. Leave a lasting impact to the transportation industry as a whole. Become familiar with tasks of different branches throughout the cabinet.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

Experience working with KY Transportation Cabinet. Survey experience. Strong work ethic and ability to think critically. Ability to communicate to staff across many branches.

Additional position information (travel required, standing/stooping/bending/lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.):

Traveling to construction sites across the state will be required. License as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors or another state with the ability able to obtain Kentucky licensure within 6-month probation period. Valid Driver’s License. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: See Special Requirements.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure as a Professional Engineer.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to employment in this job classification. Must be licensed as a professional engineer by the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors OR must be licensed in another state with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineering license from the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Engineers and Land Surveyors within the employee's initial six month probationary period. Engineering decisions recommended by individuals without a Kentucky Professional Engineering License must be approved by a KRS Chapter 322 Licensed Professional Engineer until licensure is obtained. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
