Senior Machinist

Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Senior Machinist to join our rapidly expanding team in Glendale Heights IL. As a member of the operations team, this individual will report to the Operations Manager and will be responsible for machine set-ups, maintenance, repairs, programming, and development of new specimen manufacturing processes within the various departments, procedures, continuous improvement tools, cost reductions and timely delivery of items to subsequent departments. The individual must be proficient in a number of established mechanical and machining skills. In addition, compliance with safety rules, company policies and procedures is required.

Responsibilities

Designs and performs machine sets-ups and machine programming to produce test specimens in according with consensus standards, customer specifications, internal procedures/guidance notes as well as other tools to ensure the safety, quality and effectiveness of all shop members Select and program various machines to produce, develop and validate processes to prepare test specimens for testing as dictated by processes, customer specifications, operations manager, or engineers Coordinates review of departmental maintenance requirements and recommendations, quality records and machine operations for indications of potential quality issues, troubleshoots problems and solves production issues with operators, including machine shop supervisor Develops new processes, procedures and uses continuous improvement tools to improve efficiency, reduce costs and delivery of specimens to internal customers (departments) measuring with appropriate KPI’s Reviews internal systems and business processes for effectiveness, researches and considers new approaches, identifies develops, and deploys up to date, relevant technologies to the production of test specimens Design, repair, rework fixtures for manufacturing and testing departments

Skills / Qualifications

General working knowledge of machine shop safety protocols and best practices for grinding, milling, turning and waterjet machine operation, manual and computer numeric controlled (CNC) machines and mechanical test equipment. Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings/blueprints/cut sheets and apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and GD&T. Operational understanding of various mechanical concepts, techniques and technologies used to produce and test prototype/specimens in a time sensitive environment. Depth of understanding related to machining concepts, measuring instruments e.g., calipers, micrometers, optical comparators, and dimensional measuring concepts. Must be able to work with others with minimal supervision and seek out information as necessary to clarify technical requirements from the departmental supervisors/engineers, or Operations Manager. Possesses the ability to assist departmental supervisor in mentoring and training individuals with less experience through effective communication of mechanical and machining process and technical data. HS diploma, GED certificate or Vocational school equivalent highly desired and/or 5-7 years of experience. CAD software knowledge and strong computer skills. Exemplary emotional intelligence and communication skills. Knowledge of quality management systems (Six Sigma, 5S and Lean Manufacturing, GD&T) and ISO-9001or equivalent quality system.
