📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities

Job Description

Research System Test, Modeling and Validation Engineer

We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future. We get up every day, roll up our sleeves and build a better world -- together. At Ford, we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Are you ready to change the way the world moves?

Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering team takes new ideas from theory to reality. Every day, we develop advanced energy management and propulsion technologies, create cutting-edge materials and manufacturing processes, and curate world-class cabin experiences that redefine what it means to drive a Ford.

Candidates for consideration will be responsible for supporting research and development efforts in the Digital Systems organization working on technologies for advanced systems. New Employee will be working in the Systems, Safety and Simulation department in the Model-Based Engineering (MBE) section with responsibilities spanning verification & validation, modeling & simulation and data processing.

Responsibilities

What you'll do...

Verification and Validation

Design and conducting of both physical and virtual experiments to validate autonomous marshaling and mobility infrastructure system and subsystem performance. Deliver test methods and plans coordinated to deliver per project expectations and milestones, including development of specialized scenarios that allow for directed testing and random testing, including algorithm-based control of dynamic sweeps and parameterization suitable for tuning and refining controller, verification of requirement specifications, system validation of use cases, stakeholder requirements, and safety.

Physical Testing

Conducting physical testing using vehicles within their design domain and supporting infrastructure to ensure design verification and validation of the system, including V&V of lateral and longitudinal control for automotives systems. You will design and integrate compiled models to enable running in the real time environment, including ensuring the necessary model (Simulink, dSPACE, et al) blocks are added, ensure all interfaces with the models are properly made and tune the controllers as necessary to ensure application performance meets customer requirements.

Modeling and Simulation

Create advanced simulations incorporating standards-based models using ASAM open scenario & open drive and markup languages such as YAML, JSON, etc.; model development for maps, traffic, pedestrians and vehicles specifically to be used in the development and verification of autonomous marshaling and mobility infrastructure technologies. Develop processes, methods, and tools to make simulations sharable and scalable. Use common communication protocols (CAN, CANFD) for performing metric evaluations of system modules using tools like Vector CANOE / CANAYLZER, etc., as needed.

Data processing and modeling

Apply knowledge of data methods and machine learning and AI concepts and how they can be applied to cloud computing in order to analyze large sets of data and find patterns to glean insights to support quality and safety analysis of system capabilities. Implementation and automation of regression and development of related algorithms to coordinate model updates to simulation execution, including analysis and review of simulation test data to ensure proper correlation to physical testing by utilizing real-time and post-processing data analysis tools (e.g. Matlab, etc.)

Qualifications

You'll have...

Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering , Mechanical Engineering or related field 4+ years of experience in vehicle software development, integration, testing, and validation with two or more years of experience in a production environment. 4+ years of experience using Matlab and/or Simulink and/or Stateflow for controls development, data visualization. 2+ years of experience with programming in Python and scripting languages. 2+ years of experience writing algorithms to procedurally generate test scenarios in Carla / Unreal 2+ years of experience supporting model development of simulation scenarios, including sensing, traffic, and environment modeling. 2+ years of experience with vehicle simulation software such as Carla, Roadrunner, and/or CarMaker 2+ yearsyears of experience with open-loop and closed-loop computer simulation. 1+ years of experience dSpace / TargetLink

Even better, you may have...

Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or related field Experience in automotive or aerospace system testing and integration. Knowledge of Ford development processes and vehicle controls. Working knowledge of Systems engineering and design for System Safety (ISO26262 / ISO21448) with knowledge of Model-based Engineer tools to support the same. Experience using Traffic modeling tools (e.g. DriveSIM, SUMO, VisSim, …) Experience using contemporary UNIX/Linux software environments using Make, gcc, bash, etc. Demonstrated experience working in a team-based project from inception to finish across multiple disciplines, e.g., mathematical modeling, algorithm development, application implementation, etc. Experience in a development or production system test environment, data collection, and data handling procedures. Proficiency with a distributed version control system (e.g. git, clear case, mercurial, bazaar, …) background in ADAS or AV systems. background in vehicle dynamics. Proven experience in problem solving, troubleshooting, and quick-thinking.
