About the Division

The Intake and Court Services Division is comprised of the Intake Screening Unit and the Court Services Unit, which includes the Pre-Adjudication Team (PAT). The Intake and Court units are often the initial points of contact for youth and families referred to HCJPD. The Intake Unit operates 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Intake staff screen youth referred to the department by law enforcement agencies and determine whether or not a youth should be detained and held for a detention hearing or released home pending referral to a diversion program or petitioned to appear in a juvenile district court.

The Court Services Unit is responsible for preparing a comprehensive profile of each youth referred to the juvenile district court with recommendations for the most appropriate and least restrictive dispositional outcome.

Both the Intake Unit and Court Unit identify risk factors of the youth and needs of the family and provide referrals to youth and family-oriented community resources.

About the Position

The Intake Staff Services II position acts as a receptionist and switchboard operator greeting clients and visitors, in person or on the phone, and directing the person to the most appropriate person or department for their needs. The Staff Services II is also responsible for performing clerical and administrative duties in an office setting and maintains an efficient system for office operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Performs high-volume switchboard duties.Maintains the Intake log, creates referrals, and assigns cases to appropriate staff.Assists with daily unit operations and Intake related tasks.Monitors the two-way radios and the Intake reception area.Performs routine secretarial duties.Greets and assists clients and visitors.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution and either:Two (2) years of paid experience in an office clerical role OR Two (2) years of paid experience in casework, counseling, community, or group work within a social service, community, corrections, or juvenile agency dealing with offenders or disadvantaged individuals.(Experience from both areas can be combined to fulfill the two-year requirement.)Thirty (30) hours of college credits from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of Intake and interdepartmental policies and procedures.Communicates effectively in written and oral form.Provide customer service related assistance.Maintains a professional behavior at all times when dealing with the public and staff.Knowledge of computer programs required to perform job, including Microsoft Office software, designated case management program and/or assessment tool, and general office machines and telephone system.

The Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) provides supervision and services to youth between the ages of 10 and 17, who are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court. HCJPD is the largest juvenile probation department in Texas with approximately 1,100 employees and over 3,500 youth referred to the department annually. HCJPD programs and services operate under the direction of the Harris County Juvenile Board. The Administration building is located in Downtown Houston, Texas, with several field offices throughout the County and three secure residential facilities.
