📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities
The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) is a nonpartisan organization that seeks an Investigative Associate to support the Director of Investigations at a national public-interest law firm dedicated to promoting a balanced and responsible legal philosophy for interpreting U.S. immigration law. Responsibilities: Conduct investigative research and analysis using open-source and commercial databases to develop leads on immigration issues for submitting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requestsDraft, review, and/or submit FOIA and open records requests to federal, state, and local agencies for records that may have a significant interest to the American public on immigration issuesPrepare FOIA appeal letters to respond to agency denial lettersAssist in maintaining the FOIA Case Management System, including entering data and tracking FOIA and open records requestsReview production records received from government agencies and prepare reports on significant findingsProduce written materials upon requestProduce monthly activity reportsAssist the Director of Investigations on various projects and other duties as assigned Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or universityKnowledge of the Freedom of Information Act and state equivalents – One or more years of FOIA or state information acts experience – requiredKnowledge and experience in using Microsoft Office Suite of applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint)Demonstrate good communication skills both verbally and in writing This full-time, exempt position is in IRLI’s Washington, DC headquarters.
