The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is seeking a Managing Editor for the Journal of Infectious Diseases. IDSA is a community of over 13,000 physicians, scientists and public health experts who specialize in infectious diseases. The Managing Editor, Journal of Infectious Diseases, oversees the peer review and publication of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, IDSA’s laboratory and translational science journal. This role collaborates with the Senior Director, Publishing and publications team to maintain an efficient and ethical peer review process, communicate with stakeholders, and develop and implement strategic plans for the improvement of the journal. As a representative and a voice for IDSA, they work to promote inclusion, diversity, access, and equity within the ID field.

Job Qualifications
Manages full life cycle of JID’s editorial processes, policies, standards, editorial decisions, and reporting. Ensures sound processes and workflows and ensures timely communications and assistance to editors, authors, reviewers, publisher, and other stakeholders; troubleshoot and resolve issues as needed. Liaise with other journals to promote uniformity across JID, CID, and OFID. Uses journal data to create metrics that drive improvement for JID. Reviews accepted manuscripts to ensure they meet journal requirements and sends to production at Publisher with appropriate forms in adherence to style guidelinesDevelops editorial guidelines, standards, and processes to maintain quality and consistency Works with Publisher’s Sales staff to coordinate supplements. Liaises with Publisher & Editor and provides editorial office data to support and implement strategic plans and IDA&E efforts. Provides guidance when questions arise from Editors, Associate Editors, Reviewers, Authors, and Publisher. Oversees and manages Editorial meeting process and applicable reporting. Partners with Senior Director, Publishing and Content Strategy to develop long-term editorial goalsWorks with Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor to select and procure cover art. Stays up to date with best practices in publishing, editing, digital and print media, and content creationMonitors industry trends and audience interests to inform content strategy Provides feedback and coaching to Assistant Managing Editor to foster their professional development and ensure strategic priorities are metPerform other work-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field; relevant work experience may be submittedAt least 5 years of relevant experience with at least one year of supervisory experience
Competencies: Knowledge, skills, and abilities
Familiarity with current practices in scientific publishing, peer review, editorial office management, journal publishing and the strategy and business of journal publishingExperience managing online journal submission systems (familiarity with Editorial Manager a strong plus)Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detailFirm understanding of electronic publishing processesDemonstrated editorial skillsSolid vendor management, project management and decision-making skillsAbility to engage collaboratively with stakeholdersAdvanced technology skills including PC, MS Office, video conferencing and internet-based office toolsExcellent interpersonal skills: ability to lead and manage change effectively and handle multiple priorities Ability to translate long-term plans into short-term projects and goalsExcellent organizational and process management; solid process management skills
