Job Description

The Clinical Engineering Manager provides leadership of clinical operations for facilities within the assigned area. Assist the Clinical Engineering Director with the development and execution of in-house clinical engineering strategies, a comprehensive preventive maintenance and repair program, budget processes, and medical equipment reporting process. This position provides input on the distribution of resources (staffing, budgets, and outside vendor services) of the Medical Equipment Management Program. Serves as an active participant in support activities related to problem diagnosis, repair, preventive maintenance, and quality assurance of medical equipment. Contributes to the development, implementation, and completion of annual goals and objectives supporting medical equipment service support.

Scope

Reports to the Clinical Engineering Regional Director. Involved with the establishment of clinical engineering standards and performance for facilities in the assigned area.

Essential Job Duties

Leadership

Works with all caregivers within the clinical engineering operation as it pertains to the service and management of medical equipment within the assigned area.Intermediate project management skills to assist in accomplishment of strategic goals.Provides input on equipment management projects associated with the various aspects of the equipment life cycle which includes but not limited to assessments and equipment replacement planning for new or existing medical equipment.Participates in local teams representing clinical engineering initiatives.Implements best practice models for management of clinical equipment for Intermountain Health using continuous improvement principles.Provides support and helps facilitate change, when appropriate, within the service organization.Understands the mission and vision of Intermountain Health and how the clinical engineering Program supports that mission and vision.

Program Management

Encourages the development of improved workflows and ideas to drive execution of the clinical engineering service program within the assigned area.Advanced knowledge of policies, procedures and regulatory requirements from accrediting entities, government agencies, and other applicable regulating bodies.Tracks, maintains, and communicates department and caregiver level performance monitoring, benchmarks and metrics, along with the utilization of resources.Works with the Recall Coordinator and local departments to monitor and track recalls and alerts for medical equipment.Uses the computer maintenance management system and other software packages to provide necessary data for benchmarking and metric tracking.Member of the local safety committee to ensure regulatory agency compliance.

Resource Management

Provides ongoing transparent data to clinical engineering caregivers. Conducts facility rounding.Involved with the clinical engineering hiring process including interviewing, orienting, and on boarding, as well as the caregiver corrective action process.Enhances staff competency through use of quarterly check-ins, performance evaluations, mandatory education requirements, equipment training, and staff meetings.Plays a role in caregiver engagement and setting actions plans for improvement.Active in the financial budgeting and variance reporting processes.Develops and maintains relationships with local caregivers to include physicians, administration, finance, department managers, and others throughout the assigned area.Ensures Authorized Service Providers (ASP) are functioning within organizational standards.Evaluates equipment service needs and when required can assist with the training, education, and use of medical equipment.Cultivates a culture of Intermountain values and integrity.Maintains internal and external customer satisfaction metrics within the assigned area.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Business, Biomedical/Clinical Engineering. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution.

Demonstrated equivalent work experience in clinical engineering (Healthcare Technology Management) including demonstrated experience in a supervisory role.

  • And-

Demonstrated experience creating or participating in the development of an in-house medical equipment service program.

Demonstrated experience managing a budget and tracking the financial performance of a medical equipment management program.

Demonstrated working understanding of all the key functions needed to create and manage a health care medical equipment maintenance and management service program.

Demonstrated strong communication skills with the ability to present ideas and initiatives to cross-functional groups.

Demonstrated detail oriented, sound decision making ability, and a diplomatic demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years of managerial experience in the clinical engineering / HTM service industry.

Physical Requirements

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.

Frequent interactions with customers that require employee to communicate as well as understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer, phone, and cable set-up and use.

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transport, pull, and push equipment. Will also work on hands and knees and bend to set-up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
