Tax Director
๐ Role Overview & Responsibilities
Our client, a Billion dollar company in Orange County that is at the forefront of their industry, has engaged us to bring them a Director of Indirect Tax. This leader will join a well-established Tax Department that is adding this key individual who will report directly to the Vice President of Tax. The company has a Hybrid Work-From-Home schedule, and we have successfully assisted them in adding other leaders to their tax department.
The Director of Indirect Tax will lead the Indirect team. This position provides proactive leadership for the Indirect Tax function. This leader is responsible for developing, implementing, managing, and defending the Companyโs indirect tax strategies while supporting strategic operating goals as well as overseeing the Indirect tax compliance function (such as sales & use, property, gross receipts, business license tax).
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of leading the Indirect Tax function, including but not limited to:
Provide leadership and oversight for all indirect tax matters.Recruit, train, develop and mentor indirect tax professionals.Foster strong relationships and work closely with accounting/finance, legal and business operations personnel to identify and implement indirect tax planning opportunities.Develop & implement tax mitigation strategies.Actively manage third party tax and legal advisors to effectively support the indirect tax needs.Play an active role in the development of indirect tax planning strategies, including those related to expanding business lines and operational footprint as well as tax laws and regulation changes.Ensure the indirect tax team maintains up-to-date tax expertise and awareness of tax laws pertaining to indirect tax matters and an overall understanding of their impact on the company.Lead all aspects of indirect tax compliance providing oversight and coordination for preparation of tax returns and defense of returns upon audit by the tax authorities.Provide day to day tactical guidance regarding sales and use tax classifications, exemptions, and technology systems usage.Identify indirect tax audit risks, solutions, and opportunities to mitigate risk.Manage indirect tax audits negotiating favorable outcomes/settlements.Maintain strong relationship with external auditors.Oversee indirect tax technology systems and upgrades to ensure effective use of available technology for efficient management of the indirect tax function.Develop and conduct training for business operations to implement indirect tax policy.Monitor and support risk analysis reviews facing the business which would include ASC 450 determinations and other tax accounting pronouncements with respect to indirect tax reserves.Identify, evaluate, and consult with external tax advisors, as needed, to best position the company with respect to tax planning strategies.Work closely with other groups to efficiently obtain required tax data and automate tax reporting processes and procedures.Assist with indirect tax due diligence for M&A including post-transaction integration.Other duties as assigned by Management.
Qualifications
10+ years of progressively complex state and local indirect tax experience.Bachelorโs degree in accounting and/or finance.JD or CPA (active preferred)Extensive working knowledge of OneSource, Vertex, or similar sales tax software.Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) required.Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.In depth knowledge of indirect tax law including current indirect tax developments; understanding of key indirect tax processes and data drivers.Ability to manage multiple on-going projects in a fast-paced environment while working under tight deadlines.Experience managing a tax team of more than 5 direct and indirect reports.
Preferred Qualifications
Big Four Accounting or similar experience preferred.Experience in a complex $1B+ Multi-Jurisdictional Company.Experience with data analytic tools (Alteryx, Tableau, PowerBi, Data Integrity)
