πŸ“‹ Role Overview & Responsibilities

Lilac's Visitor Services Supervisor is in charge of our historic museum ship when it is open to the public during the summer. This position supervises volunteer Gangway Greeters and Docents to ensure a positive and educational experience for visitors. The Visitor Services Supervisor is also responsible for the security of the equipment and exhibits and helping to ensure visitors behave respectfully to the ship and to the crew.

Weekend and occasional evening hours are required, from 5 to 15 hours per week as scheduled. This is a part-time hourly minimum wage job.

The Visitor Services Supervisor reports to the Museum Director.

Responsibilities

Monitor and enforce visitor behavior. Make full rounds of the decks when the ship is open to the public so that areas somewhat hidden from view are checked, such as the stern area on the boat deck. Sample activities not allowed that you may observe: smoking; touching equipment clearly marked β€œDo Not Touch;” opening doors, closets and drawers; going up ladders to the roofs; sitting on the gunwales; climbing over the side. Respond to problems reported by volunteers. If appropriate, ask visitors to leave the ship and escort them out. Establish a presence. As a preventive for bad behavior, just letting people know that a supervisor is present can act as a deterrent. Let visitors know you are nearby. That can be as simple as making eye contact and nodding, or asking if they have any questions about the ship. Provide information. Know the history of the ship. Answer questions and offer interesting facts about the ship to visitors. Be a back up to the volunteers and help them answer questions. Supervise Gangway Greeters and Docents. Participate in training of volunteer Gangway Greeters and Docents and report issues to the Museum Director. Know the subject matter for Docents. Relieve volunteers for breaks and cover the post until they return. React and respond to emergencies as appropriate. Respond to emergencies, whether human or ship-related. Be trained in CPR and first aid. Call 911 when necessary. Follow the Lilac Preservation Project’s Emergency Procedures. Secure the ship. Unlock the ship as needed for public access and to ensure visitors do not enter non-public areas. Secure all items as needed and lock the ship securely to close.

QualificationsCertified in CPR and First Aid. Previous customer service or related experience.
