Director of Development & Community Engagement

Job Summary: This is an exciting and pivotal moment for MHAAO. Our organization is stable, debt-free, and primed for growth. As we enter this exciting new chapter, we are seeking an experienced and accomplished Director of Development & Community Engagement to round out our executive leadership team, lending vital strategic direction, thought leadership, and support.

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development & Community Engagement will lead MHAAO's strategy to raise vital funds annually and significantly increase our fundraising goals. As a member of the executive leadership team, this position will take part in strategic decision-making, providing exemplary leadership, and serving as a critical thought partner to the CEO and the Board of Directors. We aim to build an extraordinary fundraising program that includes robust donor relationship management, strategic institutional partnerships, a thriving planned giving program, and successful pipeline management through a data-driven annual giving program.

The Director of Development & Community Engagement will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow MHAAO’s fundraising budget through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. They will expand and diversify MHAAO’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, they will work closely with the board of directors and the development committee, and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

This position will oversee and build a robust, high-performing team, including development, communications, and event management staff, as well as contracted support, utilizing clearly defined goals, outcomes, and transparent reporting to measure team success. They will expertly oversee development operations, providing exceptional guidance for best practices in gift processing, CRM/database management, prospect research, and stewardship, as well as fundraising and cultivation events to achieve defined outcomes. The Director of Development & Community Engagement also will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

Responsibilities:Support and partner with the ED/CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiativesCollaborate with the Finance Director to develop and implement MHAAO’s financial strategyActively work with the ED/CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include corporate, foundation, government grants, etc.Have primary responsibility for development and execution of all proposals; write and archive all proposals with a long-term relationship-management approachOversee research on funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position MHAAO ahead of major funding changes or trendsMonitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leadersDevelop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donorsMonitor and report regularly on the progress of the development programIdentify, develop, and mentor the Development teamOversee the Marketing, Communications & PR team and collaborate with them and senior leadership to develop communications strategies that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen impactDevelop and refine MHAAO’s "core" messages to ensure organizational consistency and community engagementIdentify significant media and public policy issues that can be leveraged to support MHAAO’s work, and create and implement plans to exploit themManage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual report, e-newsletters, and MHAAO’s websiteServe as executive editor for the organization's website and social media presence, coordinating maintenance and ensuring that new and consistent information (articles, links, stories, and events) is posted regularlyOversee organizational response to inquiries about MHAAO Qualifications:7+ years of professional experience with nonprofit organizations; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources)Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over timeExcellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationshipsStrong organizational skillsFlexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiativesAbility to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside MHAAOBachelor's degree required, Master's preferredHigh energy and passion for MHAAO’s mission is essentialAbility to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development planStrong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detailCustomer focusExcellent verbal and written communication skillsA professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a timeHighly collaborative; experience developing and implementing communications strategiesHigh energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels Preferred Skills/Qualifications:An advanced degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or a related fieldExperience in launching and managing a successful capital campaignProficiency in data analysis and development analyticsCertification as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or other relevant professional fundraising certificationProficiency with donor management software or CRM systems – specifically EveryActionStrong connections to Oregon’s philanthropic community
