📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities
Description:The Mercatus Center at George Mason University seeks a full-time Production Editor to join its Publications Team. This position will be responsible for copyediting and proofreading a wide range of publications, from academic research papers to congressional testimonies to research summaries. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following: Typeset manuscripts using InDesign CC, input corrections, and shepherd publications quickly and efficiently through the production process.Work closely and independently with program managers and media relations staff at Mercatus, in-house and external scholars and authors, and vendors and freelancers. The Production Editor is an essential part of the publications team and will be responsible for maintaining the editorial standards of the organization. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in economics and the Mercatus Center’s distinctive tradition of political economy, have professional knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style and be proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign) and Microsoft Word. Familiarity with Excel or other chart-creation software is desired but not required.This position reports to the Managing Editor.
Qualifications:The successful applicant will possess the following:a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related fieldat least three years of work experience; preferably in editorial, production, or project managementstrong editing and organizational skillsprofessional knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Stylea strong work ethicutmost attention to detailexcellent oral and written communication skillsability to review the work of and provide feedback to freelancersable to work independently to meet deadlines and track and coordinate multiple projects at onceinterest in the principles of economics, law, and public policy that the Mercatus Center most frequently addressescommitment to the mission of Mercatus
Finalists will be asked to complete an at-home editing assignment and several timed copyediting tests during the interview process.
