Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation)

Summary

This Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation), WG-4749-05 position will be located at Hovenweep National Monument in Montezuma Creek, UT but will work throughout the Southeast Utah Group of parks and monuments (Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, and Natural Bridges National Monument).

Duties

This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. The selectee will be in non-pay status for up to two pay periods (4 weeks) each year, scheduled sometime between late December to late January.

Major Duties

This position is responsible for providing prehistoric standing architecture maintenance for Arches and Canyonlands national parks and Hovenweep and Natural Bridges national monuments with diversified infrastructure and operational complexity.The incumbent's primary duties are performed outdoors, assist journeyman, or higher level employees with masonry, carpentry, mixing soils, water, and amendments for mortar to remove and repair damaged portions of wall or similar architectural structures.Implement prescribed preservation treatments (capping, veneering, re-pointing, resettling and new laying) to alter, maintain, repair, construct and/or stabilize a variety of assets including historic structures, foundations and ruins, contemporary buildings, trail and road drainage structures, etc. made of adobe, stone block and wood components.

Although the majority of work will be performed at either Hovenweep or Natural Bridges national monuments, overnight travel to Arches and Canyonlands national parks, in Moab, UT will be periodically required. When working at other SEUG units, travel and perdiem will be issued in accordance with NPS policy.

Physical Demands: The physical effort required is considered heavy to moderate and requires lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifting or moving heavier items with the assistance of a lifting device or other workers. The incumbent is required to work while standing, stooping, bending, crouching and climbing in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and in all manners of environmental conditions. When working from a ladder or scaffolds work involves reaching overhead, stretching or other awkward positions. Occasionally work is performed beneath building where the work is cramped and dark, or work may be done from highly elevate platforms. Sometimes long hikes while carrying a backpack may be essential as is the possibility of technical climbing into some sites.

Working Conditions: General work is done at prehistoric and historic structures throughout the park. Often these are in backcountry locations with difficult access that may require rappelling and the use of scaffold and ladder systems. The structures may be extremely deteriorated and structurally unsounds, and therefore considered hazardous. The work is often extremely dusty and of such nature that protective equipment and clothing such as hard hats, safety shoes, goggles, respirators, and ear protection are required, whether working indoors and outdoors. Some work is performed in the shop area where incumbent is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, saw dust in the air, fumes, and hazards associated with power equipment or preservations. Occasionally the work may be performed outside under adverse weather conditions. Other environmental factors such as stinging and biting insects, snakes, and poisonous plants can be encountered. Assignments could involve working with hazardous materials, such as rodent nests, asbestos, and lead-based products, etc. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices.

Ability To Do The Work Of a WG-4749-05 Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation) Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT), to include the following skills:Assisting others in the repair, reconstruction, restoration, or rehabilitation of masonry structures.Restoration of historic properties, and ability to follow construction documents when completing restoration and preservation projects. Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Hovenweep National Monument- Hovenweep National Monument consists of six detached units located along the Utah-Colorado border that contain some of the best-preserved examples of prehistoric masonry multi-room, multi-story buildings and masonry towers in open, canyon rim settings. At present, Hovenweep's six discontiguous units together encompass 785 acres, spanning an approximately 20-mile area on Cajon Mesa toward Montezuma Valley. Two of the units (Cajon and Square Tower) are located in San Juan County in southeastern Utah. Collectively, these units comprise 440 acres of the monument. The remaining four units (Holly, Horseshoe-Hackberry, Cutthroat and Goodman Point) are located in Montezuma County in southwestern Colorado and collectively comprise 345 acres. Cortez, CO, population 8,500, is one hour away, and has all services available. Blanding, UT, population 3,600, also one hour away, has most services available. Hovenweep National Monument has hot, dry summers with sunny, cool winters. Abundant recreation opportunities are available in the area.
