The NC Department of Adult Correction is seeking a licensed, action-oriented, architect with a broad knowledge and expertise in various project types and clients. The successful candidate will develop and maintain strong professional relationships with clients while offering strategic architectural planning, design and technical construction expertise on various projects, partnering, with multiple consultants and clients.

In addition to planning and project design, this Architect II will conduct onsite field surveys and investigations that include identification of code deficiencies, building envelope evaluation and structure/systems analysis, that will be translated into reports and working documents. Responsibilities further include administration of contracts for design, new construction and renovation of existing facilities, investigation of existing facilities and conditions, production of construction documents as well as preliminary studies and assessments for new and existing facilities. This position works closely with in-house engineers and the State of North Carolina Office of State Construction, in what is essentially an AE office within DAC Central Engineering. The position requires working with and directing in-house CAD Technicians in the production of construction documents using Revit. The position requires knowledge of, and experience in, using Revit in the production of construction drawings and MasterSpec in the production of project specifications. The position is responsible for the accurate coordination and production all aspects of the construction document process.

Duties include building and space programming, estimates and evaluations of costs, space requirements, code research and documentation. This position is also responsible for master planning for Departmental Agencies within DAC. A thorough knowledge of the NC Building Code, ANSI A117.1., NC Energy Code and the Americans with Disabilities Act is required. The review and correction of in-house document production regarding details, materials, and quality assurance are duties of this position. Responsibilities include document production, consultant coordination, State Construction Office approvals and every phase through project close out.

The employee in this position is expected to have must have a valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits .

About The Department Of Adult Correction (DAC)

The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

A current valid license to practice in Architecture in the state of North Carolina. A thorough knowledge of and experience with architectural design and building construction. Knowledge of NC Building Codes, State Construction Office guidelines and/or laws and ordinances relating to designing and construction/repair of buildings. Documented architectural planning and design of institutional and/or commercial structures.

Management Preferences

At least 10 years of experience in the field of Architecture. An understanding and working knowledge of AutoCad and Revit. Experience in construction administration, construction and renovation inspections and field supervision for the supervision for the purpose of ensuring conformance to contract documents. Experience with detention facilities architecture and construction is highly desirable along with a variety of project construction and occupancy types.

Bachelor’s degree in architecture or an engineering discipline related to the area of assignment from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience as a registered architect; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Valid license to practice architecture granted by the North Carolina Board of Architecture.
