The Role

This position is a waterfront engineering (field engineering) position where candidates will be supporting the new construction of Virginia Class Submarines. This is a hands-on position where candidates will spend at least 25% of working hours on the ship or interacting with mechanics to resolve outstanding issues during the submarine construction process. Few examples of common issues include: welding, Non-Destructive-Testing requirements, pipe system out of tolerance, material failure analysis and machinery component discrepancies. Candidates will be working in a construction environment on a daily basis. Candidates will review product drawings, ship-check as-built conditions of the product, interact with construction trades and then formulate technically sound engineering resolutions. Candidates will work in a leadership role; providing technical guidance and mentoring junior engineers while assisting the manager resolve other assigned urgent special projects. Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
