Medical Coding Specialist: Northeast Digestive Health Center is seeking a medical coding specialist who can accurately assign codes to diagnoses, procedures, and services provided to patients. This position is full-time, Monday thru Friday, in a privately owned gastroenterologist practice in Concord, NC. This position will work onsite at our central administration office. Job Summary:Our Coding Specialist is responsible for reviewing medical documentation, extracting relevant information, and assigning appropriate codes according to the established coding guidelines and regulatory requirements. The primary focus is on coding diagnoses, procedures, and services related to gastroenterology cases. The medical coder ensures accuracy and compliance to support optimal reimbursement and proper documentation.

Duties and Responsibilities:1. Review and analyze medical records, encounter forms, and other relevant documentation to identify diagnoses, procedures, and services performed during gastroenterology visits.2. Assign appropriate medical codes (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, etc.) to accurately represent the diagnoses, procedures, and services rendered.3. Ensure adherence to current coding guidelines, regulations, and compliance standards (such as HIPAA and CMS guidelines).4. Validate and abstract medical data from patient records to support accurate code assignment.5. Collaborate with healthcare providers, physicians, and other staff members to clarify documentation and obtain additional information when necessary.6. Resolve coding-related issues or discrepancies, including medical necessity, coding edits, and denials.7. Stay updated with changes in coding guidelines, regulations, and industry standards related to gastroenterology coding.8. Maintain a high level of accuracy and productivity in coding assignments while meeting established deadlines.9. Collaborate with the billing department to ensure proper reimbursement and billing processes.10. Assist with documentation improvement initiatives, including providing feedback and education to healthcare providers to enhance documentation practices.11. Answering incoming phone calls from patients, insurance companies, and other stakeholders regarding billing inquires and coding-related questions. 12. Providing exceptional customer service by addressing inquires, resolving billing issues, and explaining coding processes in a clear and professional manner.

Qualifications and Skills:1. High school diploma or equivalent (associate's or bachelor's degree preferred).2. 1-2 years minimum experience in healthcare billing, coding, and insurance 3. Strong knowledge of medical coding systems, such as ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS.4. Familiarity with gastroenterology-specific coding and billing requirements preferred.5. Proficient in using coding software and electronic health record (EHR) systems.6. Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology related to gastroenterology.7. Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills.9. Up-to-date knowledge of coding guidelines, regulations, and compliance standards.10. Knowledge of coordination of benefits, multiple procedural discounts, and correct use of modifiers.
