Job Summary

The CAD Designer I is a key contributor to our engineering team, focusing on the drafting and design for commercial vessels, including barges and tugs. This role is essential for creating detailed drawings and models, primarily focusing on mechanical and electrical systems integration. Working under the guidance of engineering management, the CAD Designer I will learn to ensure designs meet industry standards and contribute to the efficiency of manufacturing processes. This role is ideal for a highly motivated individual with a foundational understanding of CAD software and a passion for marine engineering.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:• None

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:• Utilize CAD software such as AutoCAD for drafting tasks.• Support project teams by providing CAD drafting and design services under supervision.• Learn and apply industry standards and regulations pertinent to marine engineering and electrical systems.• Assist in interpreting shop drawings and coordinating with vendors for component sourcing.• Participate in engineering tasks, offering support in panel and switchboard manufacturing.• Follow instructions to revise and update engineering drawings, contributing to the detail and accuracy required for manufacturing.• Begin to develop skills in creating detailed plans, sections, and elevations, understanding the importance of precision in engineering documentation.• Engage in continuous learning to improve CAD skills and understanding of marine systems.• Fulfill any other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES: • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills, with a willingness to learn and adapt.• Ability to prioritize tasks and work towards deadlines under supervision.• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with team members.• Organizational skills and attention to detail.• Introductory proficiency in AutoCAD.• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent software.

NICE TO HAVE:• Introductory/Intermediate Proficiency in Rhino & SolidWorks, or other related software for 2D and 3D modeling, drafting tasks.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:• High School diploma or equivalent.• An Associate Degree in Engineering, Engineering Design, or relevant field is preferred but not required.• No prior professional experience required; however, internships or academic projects related to CAD design are beneficial.• Basic understanding of CAD principles, with exposure to AutoCAD software.• Willingness to undergo further training, including PLC and HMI training as applicable.

SECURITY REQUIREMENTS:• Must be a US citizen.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:• Ability to distinguish various colors of wires and distinguish electronic system sections and wiring.• Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.• Ability to traverse various areas of a vessel to conduct duties.• Will be expected to work in both office and manufacturing facility environments. • Travel up to 50%.

This is a full-time onsite position located in Newport News, VA, and requires in-person attendance. Remote work options are not available.
