📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities
A biotech company based in Berkeley, CA focused on biological research to drive novel therapeutics discoveries is seeking a Head of Engineering with a background in machine learning, molecular biology, and/or biochemistry to join their growing team.
The Opportunity: As Head of Engineering you will drive strategy across all engineering projects by overseeing the software and experimental engineering teams to enable and accelerate use of internal platform tools in the start-up studio. You will speed up the company's ability to strategically narrow the biological search space by advising on and working through engineering bottlenecks, with an eye on scalability. You will also drive the development of an internal software product that allows our scientists to quickly use platform tools to make decisions and track outcomes.
Key Contributions:Set strategic engineering project goals with the CEOBe a part of the leadership team making joint decisions on growth, finance, and operationsOversee the entire engineering process to build useful, fast, scalable versions of the company’s unique platform tools.Engineer workflows and tools to increase throughput and predictability of the core inference platformOversee software engineering team to productionize tools for broad usability with an eye on UI and UX designOversee experimental engineering team to develop and automate cutting edge molecular and imaging-based assays for new startups incubated in houseUtilize ML/AI to scale and improve the company's platform predictionsBuild and lead the Engineering teamsDrive the culture of the Engineering function to be the the company's flavor of entrepreneurship, science, and collaboration
Desired Experience:PhD in computer science, molecular biology, or other life sciences is preferable10+ years of experience across academia and biotech industry including engineering team or product development leadership within a start-up environmentStrong software development expertise at scale with a background in data science, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligenceAbility to think strategically about connecting the computational and experimental engineering teams' work with an eye on end user & product use caseThe ideal candidate will have engineering experience within the biotech industry (i.e. using genomic/clinical data to develop predictive therapeutics, looking at sequencing data, using AI to predict drug targets, or building predictive platforms or tools to support research and drug development)Experience taking a product from concept to marketUnderstanding of both computational and lab experimental toolsUnderstanding of biology so they can map tools to scientific decision making process in biological researchExperience taking a scientific/research idea through the product life cycle, from concept to marketAn experienced people manager; able to meet people where they are in their learning journey
The position will require the individual to be on-site at the Berkeley, California headquarters.
