📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities

Dynamic non-profit, Response Crisis Center, seeks Treasurer for its governing Board of Directors. Response Crisis Center is Suffolk County’s 24/7/365 crisis-intervention and suicide prevention center. Founded in 1971, and nationally accredited through AAS, our mission is to provide people in crisis or in need of emotional support with unconditional compassion, acceptance and respect to lower anxiety and facilitate a process where their innate coping skills can emerge. We fulfill this mission by providing crisis counseling through phone, chat and text on our local crisis hotlines as well as through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline throughout NYS and nationally. We also provide warm line services, bilingual crisis counseling, community education and training, structured follow up and backup services with many community partners. While our crisis counselors are trained to respond to all types of life crises, they have special expertise in suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.  

The treasurer, in addition to having all the general responsibilities of a board member, will guide the Executive Director and the board in ensuring good fiscal planning, decision-making, and oversight. This is a volunteer position. Responsibilities: Oversee the development of high-level financial policies and their review by the board. Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities. Meet monthly (virtually or in person) with the CFO ahead of each monthly board meeting to review the CFO’s monthly financial report. Present the CFO’s monthly financial reports to the board and ensure it is understood by the other board members. Respond to questions board members have regarding the monthly report. Ensure that the board regularly monitors the organization’s financial performance and alerts it to any important discrepancies between planned and actual figures. Assist the Executive Director with the development and presentation of the annual budget to the board for review. Along with the Executive Director, keep the board informed of important financial events, trends, and issues relevant to the organization. Chair the board’s finance committee. As chair, these responsibilities include setting new goals and priorities of the finance committee, scheduling and leading all finance committee meetings, and communicating the work of the committee to the full board. The finance committee meets only as needed. Serve on the board’s Executive Committee, which consists of the executive director, the current board chair, the previous board chair, and the board secretary. The executive committee meets only as needed. Qualifications An understanding of and experience with good financial management and reporting practices. A professional accounting designation (not a requirement, but nice to have). An appreciation of the kind and level of financial information needed at a board level to support decision-making. As with all board members, an interest in the mission of Response Crisis Center and desire to serve as an ambassador for the organization, to promote our 24/7 crisis counseling services, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline network, and our local suicide prevention programs. Time Commitment 5-8 hours per month (board meetings, meetings with the CFO, finance committee meetings, CFO report review) Term of Office Two years, with the possibility of twice renewing if he/she so chooses Desired Experience Accounting and/or Bookkeeping
