Assistant General Counsel

Our client, a commercial real estate lender with roots in the Northeast, seeks an attorney to join their team in New York. This is a newly created role designed for a seasoned professional with several years’ experience managing closings without (or with limited) supervision. The successful candidate will report directly to the management team and enjoy regular interaction with key counterparties. As the company is in growth mode, deal flow will be steady (with a new closing weekly). Our client prides itself on an excellent culture; this is not a "face time for the sake of face time" shop. This position is hybrid and based in Midtown Manhattan.

Projected base annual salary for this role is $175K – 225K depending on experience.

Responsibilities

Provide legal support to the team. Run loan closing, including organizing checklists, following up on diligence items, drafting and reviewing operating agreements, consents, and other required documentation. Work closely with the company’s principals and general counsel and other stakeholders to ensure completion of all real estate transactions. Track transaction tasks and phases and communicate progress to team as issues and/or items are resolved. Prepare closing indices and binders and follow up on an array of post-closing matters. Conduct research and gather information using general and legal research tools. Calendar management. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Juris doctor. Admitted and in good standing to a state bar. At least four years’ experience practicing real estate law at a top law firm and/or an in-house legal department. Strong working knowledge of commercial real estate transactions, contracts, and agreements. Extensive experience closing smaller mid-balance ($1-10M in value) commercial real estate loans is essential. Exposure to loan transactions involving multifamily units a huge plus. Lenders'-side representation experience a huge plus. Familiarity with real estate due diligence, including experience reviewing and solving title, survey, environmental, and zoning issues. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
