Sober Living: Clinical Counselor (26573)

Knowledge

Expertise in substance use counseling and culture, facility with various modalities, orientations, and approaches, (e.g. Rogerian, DBT, MI, mutual aid/peer support), as well as excellent grasp of historical and emerging trends in substance use and recovery fields, including Harm Reduction & Multiple Pathways of Recovery concepts.

Fluency with electronic health record utilization and quality compliance standards with regard to client charting. NYS licensure and OASAS programmatic experience a plus.

Efficacy with collaborative approach to work alongside client to empower them to develop their individualized goals. High degree of awareness and ability to practice discernment balanced with willingness to seek supervision and support when needed.

Skills

Exemplary ability to create, maintain, foster, and (as needed) repair therapeutic relationships with clients.

Fluidity with de-escalation techniques to be utilized preventatively and proactively with regard to potential client crisis.

Key Tasks

Demonstrate understanding of the role of the Clinical Counselor at SJCS; including: skills required in the competencies of the Clinical Counselor (as defined by global criteria, e.g. IC&RC 12-core functions of Substance Use Counselors; CASAC Canon of Ethics.) Includes adherence to all NYS-OASAS and SJCS requirements and regulations concerning client care and chart compliance Practice fidelity to the treatment model at SJCS with special emphasis on adherence to person-centered care. Facilitate psycho-educational groups ranging from small group coaching to didactic lessons. Implement existing curricula to engage clients in goal-setting and supporting individual treatment planning activities. Act as coach and teacher to empower clients in problem-solving and developing coping skills to address unhelpful behaviors and maladaptive patterns, e.g. substance use. Engage in best practices with regard to transparency/informed consent (e.g. informing clients’ of their rights, responsibilities, and all program services availed to them in leading them toward their individually-designed treatment goals.) Maintain nonjudgmental awareness that all clients are free to make their own individual choices. Welcome community partners to collaborate closely with SJCS in prioritizing client success, and overall wellness.

Additional Tasks & Responsibilities

Maintain confidentiality, per agency practices and all applicable confidentiality law. Conduct individual, group, and/or family counseling sessions for all clients (maximum caseload: 10). Document all client notes, treatment plans, discharge summaries, and any/all other required forms timely and accurately. Effectively communicate with the SJCS team and community partners regarding client updates; prioritizing arrangement of “warm hand-off” care as able. Plan and conduct special groups/activities/recreation opportunities in collaboration with Program Director and all staff.

Job Eligibility

CASAC through NYS OASAS + 3 years SUD counseling experience required;

CASAC-MC (including a Masters in related human services field) preferred.
