Who We Are And What We Do

The Tennessee Department of Correction operates and oversees 14 adult prisons across the state, housing some 21,000 offenders. In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state. The Tennessee Department of Correction operates safe and secure prisons and provides effective community supervision in order to enhance public safety.

How You Make a Difference In This Role

The Prison Operations Division is responsible for the daily operation and oversight of fourteen correctional facilities (ten state operated, and four contract operated). This division oversees Classification, Statewide Transportation, Special Operations, K-9-unit operations, and Emergency Services.

Job Overview

The Director of Unit Management (DOUM) directs decentralization and delegated authority to ensure a multi-disciplinary unit team which includes counselors, caseworkers, secretaries with input from mental health, education, and work detail supervisors. The DOUM provides training, oversight and direction on inmate programming needs, and monitor participation to encourage pro-social institution and community behaviors that benefit inmates, staff, victims and society. Unit management is expected to have more effective interaction with inmates.

Key Responsibilities

Provides oversight and guidance to unit managers on the management of housing units and their responsibility for the unit's operation and security, within appropriate policy. Leads the agency in planning, developing, implementing, supervising, and coordinating individual programs tailored to meet the needs of inmates in the unit. Ensures unit managers are involved in monitoring disciplinary infractions and sanctions of inmates assigned to the housing units under their supervision. Coaches and encourages unit managers to work closely with other department heads to achieve a mutually beneficial working relationship and use of each other's expertise. Plays key role in the determination and establishment of policies and programs involved in the institutional operations, both as an advisor to the Assistant Commissioner of Prison Operations, and assistant to the Warden. Determines programmatic goals and monitors/evaluates the progress in meeting goals; determining resource needs and adjusting in objectives, work plans and commitment of resources; determining the need for and developing plans for organizational changes; assessing program impact at the local level as well as on the organization as a whole. Determines policy in such areas as program emphasis and operating guidelines; and administering general personnel policy regarding matters of significant im-portance. Develops and conducts training sessions for unit management and other staff as identified at various levels within TDOC. Accumulates and analyzes data for statistical analyses of programs for evaluation and impact on related programs. Provides advisory and informational services to internal and external leadership, courts, and law enforcement partners with respect to the agency's position on a wide range of correctional unit management issues.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree with ten (10) years of increasingly responsible management and administrative experience in adult security, law enforcement, probation/parole, rehabilitative services, correctional intelligence, correctional compliance, or another related program. Additional experience may be substituted for the required degree.
