📋 Role Overview & Responsibilities
Straight Arrow News is seeking a Technical Manager to join our growing team. We’re on a mission to raise the bar on journalism, and delivering world-class digital products is key in fulfilling that mission.
As a Technical Manager at Straight Arrow News, you will be part of a dynamic and innovative team that is constantly seeking to improve the news media industry and deliver news to viewers in innovative ways. Your work will involve overseeing software development for SAN.com, the SAN CMS, and the SAN iOS and Android apps. You will also contribute code on select projects as needed.
ResponsibilitiesLead a team of both internal and 3rd party developers to deliver high-quality software projects on schedule.Ensure that the team is writing secure, performant, well-organized, and well-documented code to fulfill project requirements.Serve as the main technical point of contact for web and mobile app development. This involves creating and distributing project schedules, resource plans, status updates, and architecture documents.Organize and track work, define and communicate project scope, proactively manage risks, and prioritize tasks and dependencies.Oversee technical architecture of all projects, ensuring that developers are creating solutions following secure and scalable architecture principles.Oversee the technical quality of deliverables from other developers by instituting best-practices such as architecture reviews and code reviews.Mentor junior developers to ensure that each individual is continuously learning and improving his/her skills.Work with product and engineering teams to plan and prioritize development sprints. Ensure that sprint deliverables are completed on-time.
Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field.At least seven years of experience delivering web, mobile app and cloud solutions. Prior experience as a software developer and as a manager / team lead are both required.In-depth knowledge of Wordpress, AWS, React Native and web front-end programming languages (CSS, JavaScript, HTML).Demonstrated experience delivering video products to web and mobile platforms, including integrations with video advertising and analytics systems.Familiarity with common programming design patterns and best practices.Experience with implementing responsive design and meeting accessibility requirements.Proficiency in common development tools and services, such as version control software, package managers, and CI/CD pipelines.Experience with modern digital media integrations including advertising systems, analytics packages, consent management, and identity management frameworks.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Strong attention to detail and strong analytical problem-solving skills.Experience leading in an agile/scrum environment.
Preferred QualificationsExperience with Automattic’s Wordpress VIP hosting platform.Experience with additional languages (C++, Python, Rust preferred)
