The Outside Plant Design Engineer plays a crucial role in the planning, design, and implementation of our FTTH (Fiber to the Home), Cable Plant/HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) and Twisted Pair/DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) networks for telecommunications infrastructure. They are responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective deployment of fiber optic cables to support high-speed data, voice, and video transmission via underground and aerial installations. The OSP Design Engineer plays a critical role in enabling the delivery of high-speed and reliable telecommunications services to customers. By designing and optimizing fiber optic networks, they contribute to the advancement of digital connectivity and communication infrastructure. Key Responsibilities: Plant Planning: Collaborate with field engineers, network engineers and planners to develop comprehensive plans for fiber optic network deployments. Analyze requirements and constraints to determine optimal network designs. Conduct cost modeling to estimate project expenses. Fiber Optic Design: Design fiber optic routes and layouts using AutoCAD and GIS software or other design tools. Determine cable types, splice points, termination points, and other components necessary for a robust and scalable network. Telecom Maps: Create and maintain detailed maps of the communication system, accurately depicting the locations of lines, devices, roads, and other relevant features. Proficiency in all aspects of OSP design and familiarity with fiber placement and splicing techniques are essential. Capable of mastering regulatory address mapping reporting and analyzing national broadband mapping datasets. Work Orders: Develop and implement work orders incorporating plans and specifications for OSP facilities, ensuring adherence to quality, schedule, and budgetary requirements. Site Surveys: Conduct site surveys to assess the feasibility of proposed fiber optic routes. Identify potential obstacles, such as existing infrastructure or environmental factors, and develop mitigation strategies. Documentation: Create detailed engineering documentation, including fiber optic route maps, splice diagrams, and bill of materials. Ensure that documentation is accurate and up to date throughout the project lifecycle. Compliance and Regulations: Stay informed about relevant industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to fiber optic network design. Ensure that designs comply with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies. Collaboration: Work in collaboration with various stakeholders, including civil authorities, customers, contractors, project managers, fellow engineers, designers, drafters, and administrative staff, to develop optimal network solutions, facilitate permitting processes, and secure right-of-way approvals. Quality Assurance: Perform quality assurance checks to verify that installed fiber optic infrastructure meets design specifications and performance requirements. Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during implementation. Optimization and Expansion: Continuously evaluate the performance of existing fiber optic networks and identify opportunities for optimization and expansion. Propose and implement improvements to enhance network reliability, capacity, and scalability. Qualifications: Minimum associate degree (A. A.) or two-year degree in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Sciences, Engineering Technology, or equivalent.Minimum 5 years in Outside Fiber Plant. Previous experience in fiber optic network design and engineering for underground and aerial installations. Geocoding experience a plus. 2-4 years’ experience in AutoCAD and GIS software and other design tools.Strong understanding of fiber optic technologies, standards, and deployment methodologies.Knowledge in SQL, Python, C++, Microsoft Access experience preferred. Ability to analyze spatial data for communication providers and translate into appropriate GIS reports and thematic maps.Knowledge to import and export data in CSV and GeoJSon formats.Familiarity with Cable Plant/HFC and Twisted Pair/DSL design a plus. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.Effective communication and collaboration abilities.Familiarity with project management principles and practices.
