K-3 Science Associate Teacher

Salary Range: $62,000 - $65,000. The position on the scale will be based on years of teaching experience and education.

The Dalton School, a K-12 independent, coeducational school located in Manhattan, is consistently recognized as one of the top independent day schools in the nation. It has a total enrollment of about 1,300 students and a faculty and staff of approximately 350.

We are seeking a full-time Grades K-3 Science Associate Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year, starting in September.

The Associate Teacher program at The Dalton School provides a unique opportunity for beginning teachers to further their teaching skills by working closely with experienced teachers and mentors in a progressive educational setting. As full-time employees, the ideal Science Associate candidate has experience teaching science to young children and implementing an inquiry-based, experiential curriculum. Working collaboratively within a K-12 Science department, being invested in reflecting on one’s practice along with excellent communication skills, a passion for working with children and a positive attitude are essential. Candidates must demonstrate an investment in providing a learning experience that is equitable for all children through their lessons and in their communications with colleagues.

Responsibilities

As full-time employees, Associate candidates must possess a passion and a promise for working with young children, excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching via ongoing graduate classes and/or professional development. Associates generally spend two years in First Program and are invited for a third year of teaching at the discretion of the school. Associate Teachers assist the Head Teacher with all day-to-day duties including lesson preparation and classroom set up. In addition to learning the craft of teaching by supporting the Head Teacher and assisting with classroom practices, Associate Teachers have additional responsibilities which include, but are not limited to:

Collaborating with the Head Teacher in all classroom responsibilities, both academic and organizationalPlanning and conducting small group or whole class lessonsAssessing and documenting students’ needsDeveloping and participating in classroom managementSupporting the Head Teachers in the daily maintenance of the classroomDemonstrate sensitivity to and awareness of the many kinds of diversity present within the First Program community (cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, learning style, etc.), as well as the social and emotional developmental needs of the students.

Qualifications

MA or MS (or working toward it) in Early Childhood or Elementary Science Education, preferredExperience working with elementary aged students in a school settingAn understanding of and appreciation for progressive education Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in writingExperience writing student reports preferredStrong proficiency with technology is requiredStrong work ethic with the ability to learn new skills quicklyStrong organizational and executive functioning skillsHas a disposition toward learning from and with colleagues about teaching practiceApproaches work with optimism, energy, kindness and a sense of humorDemonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences and supports Dalton’s commitment to equity and inclusionThe ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ease in effectively prioritizing multiple competing tasks and demands.
