Functional Job Summary
The mission of the Underwriting function is to foster sound underwriting and business decisions, develop effective relationships and contribute toward the growth and development of the underwriting department in an effort to write and retain long term profitable business. Underwriters are expected to progress through the levels of the job family based on classroom training; on the job exposure; developing their analytical skills; independent decision making; effective communication, and leadership skills.

Risk Decisions
Apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.
Customer Service
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, assigned policyholders and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations.
Mentoring and Training
Provide mentoring and training as appropriate based on job level and experience.
Projects and Special Assignments
Actively participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals.
Required Qualifications
6+ years of Employee Benefits underwriting experience High School Diploma or equivalent
Knowledge & Skills
Extensive medical knowledge in order to analyze detailed written information for risk assessment against requested policy plan information, express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service skills and excellent time management skills present. Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills. Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong demonstrated capability to mentor and provide one-on-one training as needed. Aptitude to identify training gaps and needs of trainees.
Job Complexity & Judgment
Underwrites and evaluations risk up to the most complex cases. Exercises independent judgment and discretion. Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Requires analysis and evaluation of multiple factors to resolve complex issues. Makes recommendations for new processes or procedures.
Please note - the salary range for this role is listed below. In addition to salary, our package includes incentive plan participation and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as an initial PTO accrual of 164 hours per year. Employees also receive 11 paid holidays and 2 wellness days per year.
Eligibility to participate in an incentive program is subject to the rules governing the program and plan. Any award depends on various factors, including individual and organizational performance.
Salary Range
$72,750.00 - $106,500.00
