Vice President & Vice Provost for Research

Job Description

The Vice President and Vice Provost, Research, will be responsible for providing executive level leadership including the development and implementation of standards to advance the Academic Enterprise research community. Major emphasis will include overseeing and managing projects and relationships that drive the development of clinical trial program enhancement; student research opportunities; space utilization; funded and unfunded research programs; research strategic plans; and the infrastructure to support Institutes, Cores, Centers and the Biorepository. The incumbent will also align the equipment committee and oversee efforts around the Scientific Affairs and the Institutional Office of Nonregulatory Nonclinical studies. The Vice President and Vice Provost, Research, will create synergy through innovation aligned with the Institution’s strategic plan.

Essential Job Functions

Provide oversight, structure, and coordination of Academic Enterprise student research and opportunities that encourages students to engage in research, innovation, and entrepreneurial endeavors.Oversee and coordinate research space allocation and assignment for the Academic Enterprise.Oversee unfunded research programs and plan the strategic direction using benchmark data aligned with research goals and strategic vision.Oversee and advance UTMB’s clinical trials programs in support of advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care through rigorous scientific evaluation. Oversee activities and develop the requisite infrastructure to support UTMB’s Institutes, Centers, Cores and Biorepository facilities. Develop a strategic plan for UTMB procured/shared equipment and lead the Equipment Committee by continuing to assess and inventory needed and existing equipment. Engage with key stakeholders to align organizational goals to prioritize based on criticality, impact, and technological advancements. Collaborate with Department chairs to coordinate Vice Chairs of Research activities; implement an agenda with regular communication, shared vision and feedback loop that supports development of the research enterprise. This may include definition of goals and responsibilities for Vice Chairs of Research, collaboration across departments, and resource allocation/reallocation. Oversee UTMB’s Scientific Affairs and Institutional Office of Nonregulatory Nonclinical StudiesTrack progress against project plans, generate status updates, and communicate progress and issues to leadership. Maintain a continuing knowledge of scientific advances occurring within academia. Lead efforts to disseminate research findings through publications, presentations, and other media.

Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.Performs related duties as required.Other duties as assigned by the Vice President and Chief Research Officer, Provost, or President.

Minimum Qualifications

MD or PhD or equivalent terminal degree with a minimum of 10 years of academic experience and leadership. Demonstrated success in securing extramural funding.

Preferred Qualifications

MD or PhD with 10-15 years of progressive academic research experience and leadership.Demonstrated success in securing funding for scientific research initiatives.
