Description

The Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering (CME) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track/tenured faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level focused on Environmental Engineering starting August 16, 2024. Candidates who work at the intersection of Environmental Engineering and other Civil Engineering related fields are particularly encouraged to apply.

Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, cross disciplinary research in AI/ML approaches for environmental informatics/dynamics; indoor air quality/smart building technology for one health; earth systems; environmental biotechnology; waste prevention and valorization; surface and groundwater management and remediation; resource recovery; environmental forensics; climate change risk and resiliency; and environmental sustainability.

The ideal candidate will complement the existing strengths of the CME department by bridging between the Environmental Engineering and one or more of the Civil Engineering research groups (Structural, Construction, Transportation, Materials, Geotechnical, etc.). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams across the University and will complement the department’s core environmental engineering and science research group with interests in eco-restoration, contaminant fate and transport, applied environmental biotechnology, water treatment, water supply, stormwater management, infrastructure system management, and smart, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure systems. Excellent laboratory facilities exist in the CME Department.

The successful candidates will possess a PhD (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field, and will be expected to establish a strong sponsored research program, teach, and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, and advise students. The successful candidate will be expected to perform interdisciplinary research, interface with industry, federal, state, local, national labs (e.g., Argonne), and other governmental agencies to attract external funds for support of research, provide service to the university and the profession, and publish in technical journals.

The CME Department has a vibrant civil, materials, and environmental engineering program. Faculty members in the Department are highly active in conducting cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research. Opportunities are available to collaborate with faculty from the departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Urban Planning and Policy, the School of Public Health, the largest College of Medicine in the US, and the Institute for Environmental Science and Policy with a special research focus on urban environmental issues and the Great Lakes. The Department offers a BS degree in Environmental Engineering, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering, and MS and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering, and currently has an undergraduate enrollment of about 400 and a graduate enrollment of about 200. The UIC College of Engineering has undergone tremendous growth in recent years; both COE faculty size and annual research expenditures have doubled to >200 faculty and $50 million, respectfully. Campus-wide research activity has also grown rapidly, reaching $500M. Minimum Qualifications

An earned PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related environmental science field is required for this position.
