Clinical Assistant Professor of Art Therapy

The Department of Counseling & Human Development in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville invites applications for a clinical faculty position in Art Therapy. This position is a 10-month appointment (non-tenure track) at the rank of clinical assistant professor.

We seek a scholar-practitioner and educator within the broadly defined areas of social justice, health equity, behavioral health, and/or working with marginalized and minoritized communities. Other areas applicable to Art Therapy that may complement existing faculty research interests are also welcomed.

We seek a colleague who will teach, advise, and supervise students in the Art Therapy master’s program, as well as other programs within the department, beginning July 1, 2024. There are also opportunities to teach at the undergraduate level. We welcome applicants with a wide array of counseling experiences who can effectively supervise students that offer services to diverse client populations. The faculty work closely with students and each other in a collaborative and collegial program environment. The Art Therapy program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education (ACATE).

Our department is committed to preparing practitioners and scholars who work with diverse populations to address equity and opportunity gaps (e.g., access to culturally responsive community-based mental health services) and build a socially just and democratic society. That commitment is reflected in the relationships this department has established with mental health agencies, community organizations, the local school district, and behavioral health-related entities across the city. Therefore, the successful candidate must demonstrate how they can assist students in developing their cultural humility and clinical skills in the context of intentionally coordinated clinical placements within a diverse metropolitan area.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Art Therapy or related fieldDemonstrated experience working with marginalized and minoritized communities and detailed evidence of a commitment to social justice and equity frameworksDemonstrated record of teaching excellence at the graduate level commensurate with rank and experienceLicensed or license-eligible as an art therapist in the Commonwealth of KentuckyBoard Certified as an art therapist (ATR-BC)The ability to effectively advise and supervise master’s students (A willingness to be part of a collaborative team dedicated to advancing student success

Preferred Qualifications

An earned doctorate in Art Therapy or related field by August 2024. Experience in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses at the university level and evidenced ability to teach courses consistent with the mission and vision of the Art Therapy Program. Teaching interests are open, though interest in some of the following courses would be helpful: Theories and Techniques of Counseling and Psychotherapy; Art Therapy Theories; Art Therapy Assessment and Practice; Group Art Therapy; Research in Art Therapy; and Social, Legal, and Ethical Issues. There are opportunities to develop advanced courses based on the applicant's interests, as well as elective courses. Active membership and engagement with professional organizations (e.g., AATA) within the field.

The Department of Counseling and Human Development includes doctoral programs in College Student Personnel, Counselor Education and Supervision, Counseling Psychology, and Educational Psychology, Measurement and Evaluation. Additionally, there are master’s programs in Art Therapy, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, College Student Personnel, and Counseling Psychology. There are multiple opportunities to work across disciplines within the college and across campus.

The Art Therapy Program at UofL was established in 1968. The accreditation of this program is based on the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in Art Therapy (2016). The program offers a M.Ed. in Counseling & Personnel Services with a concentration in Art Therapy. There may be opportunities to work with PhD students in the department as well.

Salary: Competitive, based upon qualifications and experience

Appointment: 10-month with possibility of summer teaching
