Position Summary

The School of Art & Art History Graphic Arts Program at the University of South Florida (USF) in St. Petersburg invites applications for a one academic year, nine month visiting non-tenure track position. The Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction position is to begin August 2024. Candidates should be prepared to contribute School of Art and Art History’s Graphic Arts Program with teaching expertise that advances global awareness and interdisciplinary knowledge.

An essential position in the Graphic Arts Program, the candidate will teach four BFA level courses per semester. Candidates must be able to teach courses ranging foundation to advance levels that could include graphic design and/or illustration with a focus on emerging digital media, communication problem solving, innovative conceptual and strategic thinking, image making, comprehensive typography, design theory, media technology, and aesthetic execution. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical and theoretical foundation of graphic design and visual communication strategies, as well as experience with relevant design software and publishing platforms. A demonstrated record of producing, presenting, and exhibiting creative original work is preferred.

The USF School of Art & Art History with 500 majors and more than 25 fulltime faculty on two campuses (St. Petersburg & Tampa), is the design and visual arts educational hub in a diverse region of more than 3 million residents. The Graphic Arts Program is housed in Harbor Hall on the St. Petersburg campus' beautiful Bayboro Harbor and adjacent to Downtown St. Petersburg. Harbor Hall has just completed a $1million renovation featuring state-of-the-art studios, classrooms, and research spaces. The design faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for their high-impact creative research achievements.

Description (examples):

Will teach a 4/4 undergraduate course load of Foundation to Advanced level courses in Graphic Design and Illustration in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025.Responsible for teaching a range of technical and theoretical approaches and methodologies including emerging digital media, communication problem solving, innovative conceptual and strategic thinking, image making, comprehensive typography, design theory, media technology, and aesthetic execution.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualification terminal degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate field of specialization or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience that meet national and/or regional accreditation standards. Demonstrable experience in Graphic Design and Visual Communication.Knowledge of current practices, techniques, technology, and issues as related to teaching Graphic Design and Visual Communication are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Terminal degree in Graphic Design, Data Visualization, Visual Communication, or related area of study or equivalent professional experience.A strong record of research productivity spanning the fields of graphic design, data visualization, UX, UI, visual communication, 3-D modeling and data science.Experience teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.Expertise in design and/or publishing on diverse platforms.Experience translating scientific date in a socially conscious manner.A record of collaboration across disciplines.
