Postdoctoral Research Associate, Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in the lab of Dr. Kenneth Brayman.

The Successful Candidate Will

Participate in planning, design, execution, and management of research projects in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory in the Department of SurgeryParticipate in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studiesDesign and execute complex laboratory experimentsPerform advanced molecular and cellular techniquesCollect, analyze, and interpret research dataAssist with development and implementation of new and/or revised research methodologies and techniquesTest experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and make recommendations for utilizationAssist in establishment of controls, criteria, and research standardsPerform critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertakenAssist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at national and conferences and workshops, and in the writing of project reports, articles, and other documentsAssist principal investigator in the preparation of proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of researchCoordinate laboratory activities and work assignments of research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and laboratory research staffOversee and coordinate periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipmentPerform additional duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates must have a PhD or MD in an appropriate biological/health science by the appointment start date. Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required. Experience in a biological/health science research capacity is preferred.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years1 and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
