Mechanical Engineer

We are looking for a passionate Mechanical Engineer to join our team. In this role, your primary responsibility will be developing multiple mechanical systems within a complex manufacturing machine. You will design, from scratch, functionally elegant mechanical and electromechanical systems and subsystems. You enjoy working on early-stage teams and have experience designing, prototyping, and validating mechanical systems. You thrive on the lack of clear answers at the outset of high-reaching projects and look forward to finding clarity and articulating it to others.As part of the hardware team, you will design the mechanical systems for Vega, our revolutionary new manufacturing process. We're looking for someone with industry experience in mechanical design and robotics, and someone who is excited about the risks and rewards of joining a world-changing startup.What You'll DoParticipate in the entire product design lifecycle for mechanical sub assemblies including requirements gathering, concept generation, detailed design with analysis, validation testing, cross-functional reviews, and manufacturing releaseDesign and build mechanical systems for unspun's automated textile machineryEvaluate new designs through engineering analysis (e.g. kinematic, dynamic, power, efficiency, thermal, manufacturability, etc.)Iterate on design concepts with rapid hands-on prototypingMechanical component design including machined parts, sheet metal, cast metal, and plasticsWork cross-functionally with other teams to take designs from prototype to productionProvide mentorship to help grow capability within the engineering teamWrite and maintain documentation for internal communication

Requirements

Ideal Qualities

BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related fields with 2-5 years experience, or 4-8 years working experience in related fieldsExperience using basic physics and mechanical engineering analysis for part and system designExperience in designing for machined, sheet metal, castings, extrusions, and injection molded partsFamiliarity with designing and integrating electromechanical systemsProficiency with 3D CAD tools (Onshape preferred)Experience with hands-on prototyping, system bring-up, and reliability testingExperience taking designs from ideation to manufacturingExperience in production design optimizing for DFM and DFA.Interest in working in an ambiguous problem space and improving documentation as you goExcellent verbal and written communication skills Bonus PointsExcited about weaving, carbon reduction, or both!

Benefits
